Thrive Mount Vernon, our Project’s Pilot Thriving Community, has been working hard to develop a collective focus on building resiliency throughout Mount Vernon, Iowa, especially within youth.
In an effort to capture district-based efforts to meet the social and emotional needs of students and help them build resiliency, the MV Community School District has now grouped district-wide initiatives under the umbrella of ”Thrive Mustangs”.
Examples of Thrive Mustangs initiatives:
- Search Institute 40 Developmental Assets
- Community Resiliency Project’s ECCE (“easy”) Model for building resiliency
- Community Resiliency Project’s School Survey of Youth
- School Community Support Initiative (CSSI)
- Mustang Leadership Camps
- Sources of Strength
- Suicide Intervention Protocol and education for district staff
- Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
- Second Step (Elementary)
- Character Counts
- Iowa Youth Survey
- Middle School Lunch Bunches
- Mentoring programs
- On-site mental health service providers
- MVMS Schoolwide Behavior Program
- Membership and collaboration with the Linn County Suicide Prevention Coalition
- Efforts to move toward implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS)
To put these goals into action, Mount Vernon is adopting the Project’s “You Matter – We Need You” curriculum. The three main goals of this curriculum are: suicide prevention intervention education, strength-based youth resiliency, and normative change regarding the development of relationships with positive, caring, trusted adults and seeking help.
Research strongly supports the identification of and development of relationships with positive adults (in addition to parents). These Trusted Adults, upon whom youth can rely and go to when help is needed, are nothing short of critical as a protective factor, in supporting personal resiliency and lessening the likelihood that youth will engage in risky behaviors.
The premise of the You Matter – We Need You campaign directed toward YOUTH:
“You Matter. We appreciate YOU and are glad you’re here. Ask for help from the caring adults dedicated to helping you grow and thrive. And pass it on by doing something to make life better for another. We Need You.”
The premise of the campaign as directed toward community ADULTS:
“You Matter. We appreciate YOU. Your time and skills are invaluable in our collective effort to raise healthy, resilient children. Please contribute your talents to support the development of each and every child in our community. We Need You.”
Congratulations Mount Vernon on implementing the “You Matter – We Need You” curriculum! We applaud your efforts to increase awareness and motivation to mobilize your community to contribute time and skills toward the support of and growth of every child.
We look forward to supporting your efforts to strengthen resiliency and a sense of community as a district staff, as a district team (students, parents, staff, community members), and throughout the beautiful town of Mount Vernon, Iowa.
